Kerala's famous backwaters comprise of vast lakes and a system of narrow canals and waterways linking them to one another. Not so long ago, these waterways served as the backbone of Kerala's transportation. And Kumarakom is the ideal place to experience the backwaters. Coconut Lagoon has rightly carved its place among the top 10 heritage resorts of the world. The resort is on a small island and can be reached only by boat. The accommodation consists of individual cottages built in the traditional Kerala style, relying heavily on wood and some with private pools. The bathrooms are open to the sky and the restaurant specializes in Kerala cuisine peculiar to the region. Activities here are just lazing in the swimming pool with Jacuzzi, walks in the nearby coconut groves or paddy fields, sunset cruises etc. |
|
|
Muted as the dawn itself, the alarm cry of a solitary pond heron breaks the early morning stillness as a dugout canoe, paddled by two fishermen, glides across the water at a determined but unhurried pace. The scene is idyllic, the mood dreamlike. Kerala’s back country waterways seem far removed from the universe most of us inhabit, yet they are linked to the rest of the world in a very real way, and have been for at least two millennia
In earlier times, if less so today, these very waterways were the staring point for the transport of South Indian spices, which eventually found their way to the distant shores of Europe and beyond. Formed by the 40- odd rivers that flow down to the Arabian Sea form the Cardamom Hills in the Western Ghats, this network of rivers, canals, lakes and estuaries compromises one of India’s most beautiful areas a rural, river in expanse of verdant coconut groves and rice paddies. In Malayalam, the language of Kerala, the backwaters are known as Kuttanad, "the land of the short people," a reference, perhaps, to the face that the farmers seen working here are often knee-deep in paddy fields, |

Spice Village is in Kumily, a small settlement three kilometres from Thekkady, the main entrance to the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The design of each cottage was inspired by the native tribesmen of Periyar, the Oorali and Mannan, who lived in similar dwellings. Infact, one of the cottages currently being used as an office, is an original tribal hut which has been modified. |

Legends are made of these. And it's not just how blue meets blue of sea and sky. Or the way sunsets melt into the night. These Indian Ocean Islands are well steeped in Ancient Tales, where the unexplored whisper for discovery. Pure white beaches, dense palm groves, thirty six islands of pure paradise each with its own story to tell. Loose yourself in this paradise - and write your own chapter to the tale.
From all the 36 islands, Bangaram is the most beautiful. It is everything you imagine a tropical island to be and from the moment you set foot on the blinding, soft, white sand you'll be totally enraptured by the exotic natural beauty of what can only be described as one of the most exclusive tropical islands in the world.

The Resort is made of 30 simple huts, mostly built in blocks of four. All the rooms are comfortably furnished with cane furniture, twin beds, ceiling fan, stocked fridge and private shower (cold water only). The deluxe huts have two bed rooms with attached bathrooms and separate living room. All these are spread across in 128 acres of land.
Bangaram as opposed to other resorts, provides a uniquely different experience. We have not built a "Resort" in its normally understood sense. No artificial swimming pool but we have a crystal clear lagoon, which we boast to be the world's largest pool. There is a dining hut by the beach where all meals are buffet style. The food normally is a mixture of local and continental with fresh fish and tropical fruits.
The beach bar is a popular meeting place and a perfect place to enjoy that pre - dinner drink. Hammocks suspended from the palm trees around the hotel is the ideal place to have a little siesta. But you really mustn't miss the most wonderful sight of all, the enthralling creatures below the sea.
It is really a drivers paradise with the myriad of tropical fish, turtles and dolphins. not to mention a ship |
